Guacamole Showdown at Epcot's Mexico Pavilion
Drinking around the world at Epcot may get all of the attention but snacking around the world is where it's at for us. So what better place to start than at the Mexico Pavilion comparing the guacamole options!
It should be noted that guacamole is also available at both table service restaurants, La Hacienda de San Angel and San Angel Inn, as well as La Cava de Tequila, a bar and lounge inside the pavilion. For the purpose of this review we chose to compare the options that either A) don't require a reservation and B) typically don't have that long of a wait.
Choza de Margarita
First up, we ordered the guacamole from Choza de Margarita. Coming in at $7.95, this version is topped with chopped mango and pumpkin seeds and served with fried flour chicharrón. These aren't your typical chicharróns as they are made of flour rather than fried pork fat so that changes the texture a bit. As you can see from the picture below on the right, they also come topped with 'salsa valentina'. For those who are spice-sensitive, ask for this on the side to try it before your chicharróns get soaked.
We also ordered our margaritas while we were here. I got the Acan Grapefruit and Max got the Guava Pink Peppercorn. The grapefruit margarita was definitely on the tart side, so if that's what you're looking for order that flavor. I actually preferred the guava margarita since it was sweeter and ended up drinking more of Max's than he would've liked ;)
La Cantina de San Angel
Second, we ordered the guacamole from La Cantina de San Angel. Seating is hard to come by in this popular area but if one person from your party is able to scope out a table while another orders, it's worth the hassle. The tables face out towards the World Showcase Lagoon and offer a nice break from the crowds.
This version of guacamole is a more standard rendition, topped with chopped tomatoes and served with a generous side of tortilla chips. While the guacamole portions are about the same for both options the side of tortilla chips is larger, which might be why this one costs more at $8.49.
Our Winner
We preferred the tortilla chips over the flour chicharrons to accompany our guacamole, but at the end of the day we'd choose the guacamole from Choza de Margarita for the fun toppings and better overall flavor. BONUS: it's a one-stop-shop for your snack and better margaritas.
If you're more of a guacamole purist, you'll be happier with the traditional version from La Cantina de San Angel. Either way, you really can't go wrong as both are solid options!
